Elevator Inspection Requirements by State

Who Inspects Your Elevators Depends on Where You Are

Elevator safety in the United States isn’t governed by one national rulebook — each state (and sometimes each city) decides how its elevators get inspected, how often, and by whom. Broadly, there are three models: states that license private third-party inspectors to perform mandated inspections, states whose own employees inspect every unit, and a handful of places that leave conveyance rules to local jurisdictions entirely.

Rise Inspection Services is a QEI-certified third-party inspection agency. In third-party states, firms like ours perform the state-mandated inspections and file the results directly with the authority. In state-run jurisdictions we still support owners and property managers with maintenance evaluations, test witnessing, and compliance consulting.

Use the map and directory below to find the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) wherever your buildings are. Every link goes to the official government resource, and each one was checked and verified in July 2026.
